Kii AA is grown in Kirinyaga County, which is located in the heart of the country, about 112 km northeast of the capital Nairobi. The coffee takes its name from the Kii River. The cold, fresh and fast-flowing water comes directly from the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya and is the source of the water used to wash the coffee. Kirinyaga is known for its excellent coffee, which is grown on fertile volcanic slopes at an altitude of 1,700 to 1,900 metres above sea level and receives abundant rainfall for coffee cultivation.

Kenya produces an average of 750,000 bags of coffee per year and relies heavily on smallholder farmers, as the average farm size in Kenya is 1 to 2 hectares. Many grow just 150 coffee trees: They take the cherry to centrally located mills where their coffees are weighed, sorted and combined into batches large enough for processing and export.

The Kii Coffee Factory was founded in 1954 and is part of the Rung’eto FCS Cooperative. The cooperative is located in Ngariama, Gichugu Division, Kirinyaga East District on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya. About 2000 active farmers with an average farm size of 0.5 to 1 hectare supply their cherries to Rung’eto FCS. In addi- tion to coffee cultivation, the cooperative also operates a dairy farm. The community benefits from integrated farming and a continuous cash flow. There is also a support programme to improve cultivation methods
